Scientist, Assay Productization
Job type: Full Time · Department: Research & Development · Work type: On-Site · USD 123,100-166,500 / year
Pleasanton, California, United States
About the Role:
We are seeking a talented Scientist I to join the Assay Productization team to support the development and commercial launch of new Single Cell Genomic products. Assay Productization acts as the interface between R&D and Production, and is involved in all stages of product development from concept to post-launch activities. This is a cross-disciplinary position that works closely with Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Microfluidics, QC, and Manufacturing to develop and validate novel reagents across the 10x product portfolio.
At this level, you will independently apply scientific expertise to a variety of projects and challenges within the Product Development Process (PDP) . You will identify problems, design experiments, own key AP deliverables, and communicate findings to internal stakeholders. Candidates should have hands-on experience with NGS workflows and reagent or assay development, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
What You Will Be Doing:
Independently execute and design experiments, including NGS library preparation from single cells, tissues, or isolated DNA/RNA using 10x instruments and consumables.
Draft, maintain, and update manufacturing readiness documentation, including production batch records, without assistance.
Optimize and refine quality control (QC) methods and assays to assess reagent quality through a variety of analytical and functional tests.
Own AP deliverables end-to-end for low complexity projects, and contribute to complex projects under guidance from an AP lead.
Perform troubleshooting of failed experiments and reagent issues as they arise, identifying root cause and determining best course of action.
Support reagent guard banding and stability studies.
Update parts and shelf-life documentation, including Part Specifications and Receiving Inspection Records (PS/RIR), via Engineering Change Orders (ECOs).
Facilitate handoffs from R&D to Operations by training QC and Production staff on new workflows and methods.
Present experimental data and results clearly to internal stakeholders, with well-reasoned interpretation and analysis.
Communicate identified risks appropriately and proactively, and collaborate cross-functionally to resolve issues.
Minimum Qualifications:
BS in molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, analytical chemistry, or a related field with 5+ years of relevant experience; or MS with 3+ years; or PhD with 1+ year.
Demonstrated hands-on experience with NGS library generation, data evaluation, and next-generation sequencing workflows.
Prior work in a process or product development role, including technology transfer to manufacturing and/or QC groups.
Solid understanding of molecular biology fundamentals and reagent or assay development, preferably within the Biotech or Life Sciences industry.
Proficiency with analytical techniques including qPCR, HPLC, Enzymatic Assays, and instrumentation such as Bioanalyzers or Fragment Analyzers.
Ability to independently design, execute, analyze, and interpret multi-step experiments with diligent attention to planning, organization, and record keeping.
Experience troubleshooting molecular biology-based assays and identifying root cause of failures.
Familiarity with manufacturing documentation systems and quality processes (e.g., batch records, ECOs, or equivalent).
Strong collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across scientific and operational teams.
Self-motivated with the ability to manage and prioritize work independently in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous experience with single cell genomics, RNA-Seq, or other advanced NGS sample preparation workflows.
Experience working with new and untested reagents, and designing and optimizing novel assays from early concept through validation.
Familiarity with PLM/ERP systems such as Arena for document and parts management.
Background in product lifecycle management (LCM) or new product introduction (NPI) processes.
Experience contributing to or leading cross-functional project efforts with defined deliverables and timelines.
