Marketing Communications Manager

Job type: Full Time · Department: Marketing · Work type: On-Site · USD 130000 - 180000 / year

Menlo Park, California, United States

The Role

We're looking for a Marketing Communications Manager to own the full breadth of our external-facing presence: From crafting technically rigorous content to organizing our conference presence to building a social following among the engineers, operators, and procurement teams who buy materials. You'll report directly to our BD lead and work closely with our founders, scientists, and engineers to translate complex science into customer-ready stories.

You don’t have to be an expert in every discipline, but you'll bring genuine depth in a few areas and the drive to learn the rest. You'll have significant latitude to define what great marketing looks like at Aether.

What You'll Own

Content & Storytelling

  • Translate complex materials science, biology, and AI into crisp, compelling narratives for technical and commercial audiences - from government/defense buyers, startup engineering teams, and procurement leads

  • Write and maintain sales enablement materials: one-pagers, case studies, capability briefs, and pitch decks in partnership with the BD and Product Development teams

  • Develop a content calendar and drive consistent publishing across owned channels

Social & Digital Presence

  • Own our LinkedIn and other relevant channels - grow our following among target technical and buyer communities

  • Find creative ways to share customer wins, product milestones, and company culture without giving away competitive IP

  • Track engagement metrics and iterate based on what works

Events & Conferences

  • Take ownership of 2-3 industry conferences per year end-to-end: logistics, materials, booth presence, and speaker submissions

  • Measurably tie conference participation to qualified sales leads in coordination with BD

  • Identify the right events for our target audiences in additive manufacturing, defense materials, and advanced manufacturing

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with scientists and engineers to surface story-worthy technical milestones

  • Partner with BD to ensure marketing outputs directly support pipeline generation

  • Build and maintain a lightweight asset library so the team can self-serve on collateral

What We're Looking For

Required

  • 6+ years of marketing experience, ideally in deep tech, materials, biotech, defense, or advanced manufacturing

  • Demonstrated ability to write clearly and compellingly about technically complex subjects - writing samples required

  • Experience owning social channels with a track record of audience growth in a B2B context

  • Hands-on experience organizing or managing company presence at industry conferences

  • Comfortable working autonomously in a fast-moving, resource-constrained environment

  • Strong design sensibility - able to produce clean, professional one-pagers and decks (Canva, Figma, or equivalent)

Nice to Have

  • Background in or strong familiarity with additive manufacturing, composites, or advanced materials

  • Experience marketing to government/defense customers (AFWERX, DIU, DoD procurement ecosystems)

  • Familiarity with HubSpot or similar CRM for lead tracking and attribution

  • Prior experience as a first marketing hire or in a startup with a small GTM team

What Success Looks Like

In your first 6 months, you will have:

  • Taken ownership of at least one major conference from planning to post-event lead follow-up

  • Built a repeatable content cadence that the BD team actively uses and references

  • Grown our LinkedIn presence with measurable increases in followers and engagement among target audiences

  • Produced a set of updated sales materials (one-pagers, capability decks) that the BD lead is proud to send

  • Established a clear framework for attributing marketing activities to sales pipeline

Note:

The pay range for this role is $130,000 - $180,000 per year + equity, with final compensation based on skills and experience.
