About the opportunity
The Accounts Lead (Retail) is responsible for overseeing all financial operations across retail locations, with a specific focus on cash reconciliation, daily accounting processes, and accounts receivable management. This role will lead a team of accountants and bookkeeping staff, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting across all retail stores. The ideal candidate will possess strong operational knowledge, team leadership capabilities, and deep expertise in retail accounting principles and cash management.

Key responsibilities
A. Retail Cash Reconciliation & Management

  • Establish and oversee standardized daily cash reconciliation procedures across all retail locations.

  • Monitor point-of-sale (POS) systems and cash register data to reconcile actual cash with recorded sales.

  • Investigate and resolve cash discrepancies, shortages, and overage incidents; document root causes and corrective actions.

  • Coordinate daily cash pickup, verification, and bank deposit processes from multiple retail locations.

  • Maintain accurate cash float records and float adjustment documentation.

  • Implement internal controls for cash handling, including dual reconciliation and segregation of duties.

  • Generate daily cash reconciliation reports and escalate discrepancies to Finance Controller.

  • Reconcile bank deposits to general ledger and resolve timing differences.

B. Retail Store Accounting & Financial Records

  • Oversee day-to-day accounting operations for all retail locations including journalizing transactions, processing invoices, and recording expenses.

  • Ensure accurate recording of retail sales, returns, discounts, and promotions in the general ledger.

  • Review and verify inventory adjustments, shrinkage provisions, and obsolescence write-offs.

  • Maintain store-level subsidiary ledgers for receivables, payables, and inventory accounts.

  • Coordinate month-end close procedures for retail locations: account reconciliation, accruals, and adjusting entries.

  • Prepare store-level financial statements and variance analysis against budget.

  • Document accounting policies specific to retail operations and ensure consistent application across locations.

  • Ensure accurate tracking of rental expenses, utilities, employee payroll, and store-specific costs.

C. Accounts Receivable (AR) Oversight

  • Supervise AR team responsible for customer credit management, invoice issuance, and collections.

  • Monitor aging of receivables and implement proactive collection strategies to minimize bad debt exposure.

  • Review and approve credit limits, delinquency reports, and collection follow-ups.

  • Manage provision for doubtful debts and bad debt write-offs with appropriate approvals.

  • Reconcile AR subsidiary ledger to GL and investigate variances.

  • Coordinate AR aging analysis and debt collection metrics reporting.

  • Process customer payments, discounts, allowances, and credit memos with supporting documentation.

D. Audit & Compliance

  • Prepare retail accounting documentation for internal and external audits.

  • Address audit findings and implement remediation actions on a timely basis.

  • Ensure compliance with accounting standards, tax regulations, and company policies.

  • Participate in internal control assessments and testing for retail accounting processes.

    Key skills & qualifications

  • MBA/Bachelor's degree in Commerce, Accounting, Finance, or related field.

  • 5–7 years of experience in retail accounting, cash management, or finance operations.

  • 2–3 years of team leadership or supervisory experience.

  • Strong proficiency in accounting systems (e.g., Tally, SAP, Oracle, NetSuite) and POS systems.

  • Expert-level knowledge of MS Excel, including pivot tables, VLOOKUP, and data reconciliation.

  • In-depth understanding of Indian Accounting Standards (Ind-AS) or GAAP.

  • Strong knowledge of inventory accounting, cash management, and month-end close procedures.

  • Sound grasp of internal controls, audit procedures, and compliance requirements.

  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

    Preferred Qualifications :

  • Chartered Accountant (CA)/(CA Inter) or equivalent professional certification.

  • Prior experience in e-commerce, D2C, or omnichannel retail operations.

  • Experience managing multi-location retail operations (5+ stores).

  • Exposure to SAP, Oracle, or advanced ERP systems.

  • Knowledge of GST/tax regulations specific to retail operations.
