Director, Applied AI & Analytics Engineering

Job type: Full Time · Department: Data · Work type: Remote

United States

At Carrum, we are transforming how we pay for, deliver and experience healthcare. If you are passionate about changing healthcare and want to finally get rid of surprise bills, poor quality, and high prices, while thriving in an entrepreneurial, cutting-edge environment, we would love to connect with you.

In 2014 Carrum reinvented the Centers of Excellence (COE) category in digital health. Today, 95% of the US population lives within 50 miles of a Carrum COE and our providers rank in the top 10% nationally. Our team’s execution has been recognized by the venture community and we’ve raised more than $96M in aggregate from investors like OMERS, Tiger Global Management and Wildcat Ventures. Our impact has been externally proven in a 2021 RAND Corporation study and featured as a Harvard Business School (HBS) case study.

We are adding a Director, Applied AI & Analytics Engineering to be a senior, hands-on leader responsible for building and running Carrum's Data Science and Analytics Engineering capabilities. You will lead a team of data scientists and analytics engineers, setting technical direction, owning the analytics roadmap, and personally contributing to the modeling, analysis, and data architecture work the team delivers. This is a player-coach role: you write code, build models, and review pull requests as much as you set strategy and develop people.

You will define how data is modeled, measured, and made accessible across the organization, and partner with Product and Engineering to embed AI, data science and ML directly into the Carrum platform. The business will look to you to make Carrum measurably smarter: sharper member and care team intelligence, more precise financial and revenue cycle analytics, CRM and funnel optimization that drives conversion, and AI capabilities that meaningfully improve how care is navigated and delivered.

This is a full time position, the salary range for this role is $220,000 - $255,000 plus bonus, depending on level of experience and geographic location.

You’re excited about this opportunity because you will...

  • You lead by doing. You write code, build models, and review work at the technical level. Your team knows you can do what you are asking them to do, and that earns a different kind of trust.

  • You mentor with intention. You invest in the growth of your team through direct coaching, rigorous code and model reviews, and creating space for people to stretch into harder problems.

  • You connect analysis to action. You don't ship insights into a void. You partner with business leaders to frame the right questions, deliver answers they can act on, and follow through on what changes as a result.

  • You make data trustworthy. You take data quality personally. Stakeholders across the business rely on the numbers your team produces, and you build the infrastructure and culture that makes that confidence warranted.

You balance depth with breadth. You are credible enough to review a model architecture and strategic enough to set a two-year roadmap. You know when to go deep and when to delegate.

We’re excited about you because…

  • 12+ years in data science or analytics engineering, with at least 3 years leading teams in a healthcare or regulated industry setting.

  • Hands-on practitioner: you write production-quality Python or SQL, build and deploy models, and are expected to contribute directly alongside your team, not just review their work.

  • Deep experience with healthcare data environments: HIPAA/PHI compliance, claims data, episode-level analytics, and the accuracy and auditability standards required in regulated settings.

  • Proven experience in finance analytics or revenue cycle management, including revenue recognition, cost tracking, claims reconciliation, and financial reporting infrastructure.

  • Strong analytics engineering foundation: data modeling, dbt or equivalent transformation tooling, semantic layer design, and self-serve analytics at scale.

  • Track record delivering production-grade AI, ML and data science solutions, from problem framing through deployment, monitoring, and iteration.

  • Experience building member or customer funnel analytics, propensity and segmentation models, and next best action frameworks that drive measurable conversion or engagement outcomes.

  • Strong communicator who can translate complex analytical work into clear executive narratives and hold their own in WBRs and leadership forums.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience with value-based care, specialty care, employer health benefits, or care navigation in a digital health environment.

  • Familiarity with CRM data integration and analytics, including pipeline modeling, outreach prioritization, and conversion attribution.

  • Background in MLOps and model governance including deployment pipelines, monitoring, drift detection, and audit trails in regulated environments.

  • Experience with experimentation platforms and causal inference methods applied to member engagement or operational programs.

  • Experience evaluating and integrating third-party AI vendors or data products into an existing analytics stack.

Why you’ll love working with us...

  • We’re a hard-working, humble, and compassionate group motivated to solve the hard problems in healthcare today. You’ll work with talented, experienced co-workers from companies like Booz & Company, Livongo, 98point6, Google, and Optum. We believe in using data to inform decisions, technology to make our jobs easier, and creative thinking to pave the future.

  • We are working with some of the most recognized and esteemed names in the country. Top hospitals like Johns Hopkins, Mayo Clinic, Stanford Health Care, Scripps Health, and Rush Health have joined our platform. Employers who use our benefit include US Foods, United Airlines, and large public sector organizations like the self-insured schools of California, and the State of Maine.

  • We empower team members to be autonomous and provide a collaborative environment where you get support and healthy feedback. You can bring your authentic self to work every day and are encouraged to help others do the same.

  • We carve out time to let go of work to celebrate our successes and have fun. We’re a remote-first company with employees all over the United States and two office locations in San Francisco and Chicago. We support our employees during the work day and beyond with flexible working hours, generous time off, paid parental leave, and opportunities to connect with coworkers both virtually and in-person.

  • We embrace our team’s diversity of thought, experience, and interests and know that doing so makes us stronger as a company. Carrum has an active employee-led Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice (DEIJ) committee and several employee resource groups (ERGs). Our ERGS help employees build stronger connections through social, educational, and community activities.

  • You’ll feel proud that the work you do each day directly impacts people’s lives in big and meaningful ways.
