About the Job

Collate is the creator of the fast-growing open-source OpenMetadata project, and we’re passionate about transforming the way data teams work together. Our founders were the creators of Apache Hadoop, Apache Atlas, and Uber Databook, and previously founded and IPO'd Hortonworks.

We are on a mission to help every company realize the fullest potential of data through AI Agents, open-source, and unified metadata, by solving problems around data discovery, observability, and governance that current data catalogs and quality tools fail to address.

As a Senior Developer Relations Advocate, you will join a growing DevRel team to help keep OpenMetadata as the #1 open source metadata platform. This role is focused on expanding our community reach — sharing the load on external speaking and events, proactively sourcing and activating customer advocates, and contributing to the community programs that turn passive users into active contributors and champions. You’ll collaborate closely with the existing DevRel team: contributing to our content, supporting monthly meetups, and driving outbound community and advocacy work to help us scale. This is a high-output role for someone energized by all aspects of community building.

Outcomes & Activities:

  • Build open source success: Deliver a first-class open source experience to the community of users, contributors, and future Collate customers through their maturity journey

  • Drive community growth: Grow GitHub stars, Slack community members, online community meeting attendance, and website testimonials

  • Speak at Open Source conferences: Represent OpenMetadata at relevant industry conferences to grow awareness and community engagement. Identify, craft, and submit CfP talks.

  • Build technical content: Contribute to existing DevRel work of technical blog posts, how-to videos, sample code repos, etc.

  • Support community engagement: Participate actively in the OpenMetadata community and other relevant community channels, including LinkedIn, Reddit, Discord, and others.

  • Carry the voice of the practitioner: Bring back feedback from the practitioner to help inform open source and commercial product feature development, updates to documentation, discussions with the engineering team, etc

  • Champion OpenMetadata advocates: Identify and track production users; build relationships and invite them to speak, contribute, or participate as case studies; create and run Champions, Power Users, and Regular Contributors programs to turn passive users into active advocates.

Competencies:

  • Experience: 5+ years of experience as a data engineer, with subject matter knowledge of solving data engineering problems at all scales.

  • Community: Experience building, scaling, and managing developer communities, user groups, and meetups for global audiences

  • Communication & Presence: Strong written and verbal communication skills. Comfortable representing a technical product externally — whether on a conference stage, a meetup panel, a video call, or a community thread. You’re not shy about being in front of an audience.

  • Culture fit: Collaborative, high-energy, supportive team player who can independently drive projects and focus on the needs of our customers.

  • Nice to Have: Developer Relations / Sales Engineering / Technical Product Marketing experience

  • Nice to Have: Experience working with and contributing to open source communities, particularly for data engineering projects
