About the Role:
As a Software Engineer III on TravelCover, you will own the technical foundation for our first direct-to-consumer travel insurance product. You'll lead the end-to-end solution design and delivery—building the product surface that lets travelers purchase protection directly, iterating based on real market signals, and helping determine whether D2C travel becomes a new growth channel for Cover Genius.
We're building AI-first. You'll use agentic tools like Claude Code and Gemini as core parts of your workflow—not as novelties, but as multipliers that let a small team ship like a big one. You'll help define what AI-augmented development looks like for TravelCover, from code generation to testing to documentation.
This is a founding role: you'll be the first engineer, which means high ownership, real ambiguity, and outsized impact. You'll make technical decisions that shape the product, collaborate directly with product and business stakeholders, and influence hiring as the team grows.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead the end-to-end design and delivery of the TravelCover D2C product surface—from discovery through production.
Own complex features across the stack, making technical decisions that balance speed-to-market with long-term quality.
Use AI tools (Claude Code, Gemini) as core workflow accelerators; develop prompt strategies and agentic workflows that multiply your output.
Drive solution design for significant features, breaking down ambiguous problems into actionable, value-driven plans.
Collaborate closely with product, design, and business stakeholders to translate customer needs into technical solutions.
Establish testing, observability, and reliability standards for the TravelCover platform.
Mentor engineers as the team grows—elevate capabilities in AI-assisted development, customer-centric thinking, and end-to-end ownership.
Participate in code reviews with a lens on quality, security, and alignment with architecture direction.
Skills and Experience:
4-6 years of experience in software development, with a track record of leading complex features from design through delivery.
Strong proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript with hands-on experience in Node.js; experience with NestJS or similar frameworks preferred.
Experience with front-end technologies including React or equivalent modern frameworks.
Fluent with AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Gemini, or similar)—you've integrated them into real workflows, not just experimented.
Working understanding of LLMs beyond code generation: prompt engineering, context management, and knowing when AI adds value vs. traditional code.
Solid grasp of software design principles—your components are testable, debuggable, and have well-thought-through APIs.
Experience designing and building APIs, with awareness of scale, security, and maintainability.
Comfort with ambiguity—you've built systems where requirements were discovered along the way.
Understanding of cloud infrastructure (AWS), containerization (Docker), and CI/CD practices.
Strong communication skills; able to document decisions, write clear specs, and collaborate effectively across functions.
Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, a postgraduate degree and/or a record of academic achievement is also desirable
Proficiencies and Attributes
Ownership & Delivery:
Leads complex problems end-to-end—from breaking down ambiguity to shipping production code.
Follows through on commitments with consistent velocity; anticipates blockers early and communicates proactively.
Balances speed with quality; knows when to iterate fast and when to invest in durability.
Commits to realistic scope and delivers with urgency—your team counts on you.
Communication & Collaboration:
Communicates ideas concisely and clearly on technical subjects; offers solutions, not just problems.
Builds strong relationships across engineering, product, design, and business roles.
Shares knowledge proactively—through pairing, documentation, PR descriptions, and team demos.
Handles disagreements constructively; uses differing opinions as a basis for productive conversations.
AI-First Mindset:
Treats AI tools as essential infrastructure, not optional add-ons; continuously experiments with new capabilities.
Uses advanced prompt engineering to break down ambiguous problems and generate comprehensive technical plans.
Identifies opportunities to improve team workflows by integrating AI-assisted development practices.
Helps others adopt AI workflows; shares what works and raises the floor for the whole team.
