About the Role:
As Engineering Manager for our Logistics squad, you will build and lead a team that provides technical solutions to our shipping and logistics partners—enabling embedded protection for packages, deliveries, and supply chains at scale.
We're building AI-first. You'll foster a culture where agentic tools like Claude Code and Gemini are core parts of the engineering workflow—not novelties, but multipliers that let a small team ship like a big one. You'll guide your team in adopting AI-augmented development practices, from code generation to testing to documentation, and help define what "agentic software engineering" looks like at Cover Genius.
You're joining early: the squad has one engineer today. You'll shape how we hire, how we build, and how we deliver. This is a player-coach role where you'll contribute technically while growing the team's capabilities and capacity.
Key Responsibilities:
Design and develop technical solutions for our logistic partners – defining patterns that scale across many providers and product types.
Drive technical excellence through code reviews, design discussions, and architectural decisions that balance speed with long-term maintainability.
Own the team's delivery outcomes—track efficiency, adjust processes, and ensure high-quality work ships on schedule.
Build and lead the Logistics engineering team—hire, develop, and retain top talent who thrive in an AI-first environment.
Foster a culture of responsible AI adoption; guide the team to integrate AI tools into their workflows while ensuring quality and security standards are met.
Partner with product and business stakeholders to prioritize the roadmap and translate partner needs into technical strategy.
Establish observability and reliability standards; ensure the team owns the operations of their systems with proper on-call processes and incident response.
Create an inclusive environment where engineers can do their best work; provide regular feedback and coaching that accelerates growth.
What you will bring:
3+ years of engineering management experience, with a track record of building and developing high-performing teams.
6+ years of software development experience; you've shipped production systems and can evaluate technical decisions credibly.
Strong technical foundation in modern backend technologies (Node.js/TypeScript, Python, or similar); experience with APIs and third-party integrations.
Experience fostering AI-first development practices—you've guided teams to adopt agentic tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Gemini, or similar) as core workflow accelerators.
Working understanding of LLMs beyond code generation: prompt engineering, context management, and knowing when AI tools add value vs. when traditional approaches are better.
Understanding of microservices architectures, cloud infrastructure (AWS), and containerization (Docker/Kubernetes).
Comfort with early-stage team building—you've operated in environments where processes were discovered along the way.
Strong communication skills; able to align stakeholders, document decisions, and influence across function.
What you will have:
Technical Excellence:
Empowers engineers to achieve a high bar of engineering excellence; creates space for testing, automation, observability, and documentation.
Drives quality through code reviews and design discussions; holds the team's work to high standards.
Ensures the team owns operations of their systems—on-call rotas, incident response, and continuous improvement.
Team Leadership & People Development:
Creates an inclusive environment where engineers do their best work; seeks feedback and adapts ways of working.
Coaches engineers in collaborative problem-solving, customer-centric thinking, and end-to-end ownership.
Delivers timely, constructive feedback; develops talent and aligns individual growth with team success.
Ownership & Delivery:
Creates a culture of ownership and accountability; pushes for decisions to be made effectively and removes blockers.
Aligns team work with product strategy and OKRs; focuses on outcomes, not just output.
Proactively manages risk—escalates issues appropriately and keeps stakeholders informed.
Brings together work from multiple contributors into cohesive, achievable plans.
AI-First Mindset:
Fosters a culture of responsible AI adoption; encourages experimentation while ensuring quality and security.
Leads the team to evaluate and integrate AI tools that improve productivity, quality, and velocity.
Understands the ethical and security implications of using AI tools with company data and code.
Thinks in terms of leverage—automates the repetitive, focuses human attention on judgment calls.
Helps the team adopt AI workflows; shares what works and raises the floor for everyone.
Embodies Cover Genius's values: Bold, Authentic, Purposeful, and Inspired.
