Precision Mechanical Engineer

Job type: Full Time · Department: Engineering · Work type: On-Site

Bengaluru, Karnataka, India

Digantara is a leading Space Surveillance and Intelligence company focused on ensuring orbital safety and sustainability. With expertise in space-based detection, tracking, identification, and monitoring, Digantara provides comprehensive domain awareness across regimes, allowing end users to have actionable intelligence on a single platform. At the core of its infrastructure lies a sophisticated integration of hardware and software capabilities aligned with the key principles of situational awareness: perception (data collection), comprehension (data processing), and prediction (analytics). This holistic approach empowers Digantara to monitor all Resident Space Objects (RSOs) in orbit, fostering comprehensive domain awareness.

We are looking for a skilled and motivated Mechanical Engineer with 3+ years of experience in precision engineering, mechanical design, and product development. The candidate will be responsible for the complete optomechanical development lifecycle, from concept through qualification and assembly, ensuring compliance with performance, environmental, and launch requirements.

Why Us?

  • Competitive incentives, galvanizing workspace, blazing team, frequent outings—pretty much everything you have heard about a startup + you get to work on space technology.

  • Hustle in a well-funded startup allowing you to take charge of your responsibilities and create your moonshot.

Ideal Candidate:

  • Has experience in the design, development, qualification and delivery of high-precision mechanical systems requiring sub-micrometer level accuracy and dimensional stability, from concept through manufacturing, assembly, testing and product realization.

  • Is proficient in designing ultra-high precision mechanical assemblies involving sub-micrometer-level tolerances, precision interfaces and high dimensional stability.

  • Understands the influence of manufacturing processes, thermal effects, material behavior and assembly techniques on micrometer-scale dimensional variation.

Responsibilities

  •   Design and develop ultra-high-precision mechanical systems and assemblies capable of maintaining sub micrometer level dimensional and positional accuracy throughout manufacturing, assembly, testing and operational use.

  • Develop mechanical designs with careful consideration of tolerances, manufacturability, assembly, inspection, reliability and lifecycle performance.

  • Perform structural, thermal, vibration, and tolerance analyses to ensure system stability in the order of single digit microns and repeatability under thermal and other environmental loading.

  • Understand specify geometric tolerances, surface finishes, fits, and manufacturing requirements necessary to achieve single digit micron level precision.

  • Support metrology, inspection, root cause investigations and implementation of design improvements.

  • Work closely with manufacturing, quality, suppliers, and integration teams to achieve micrometer-level dimensional control throughout fabrication and assembly.

Required Qualifications

  •  Bachelor's or Master's degree or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or a related discipline.

  • Experience in precision mechanical design and product development involving micrometer-level dimensional control, preferably in optics, aerospace, space, semiconductor, scientific instrumentation, medical devices or similar industries.

Strong understanding of:

  •  Precision mechanical design methodology

  • Tolerance allocation and stack-up analysis

  • GD&T and engineering drawing standards

  • Material selection for dimensional stability

  • Structural mechanics and thermal deformation

  • Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Precision Assembly (DFA)

Familiarity with:

  • Precision machining capable of micrometer-level tolerances.

  •  Thermal, vibrational and other environmental effects on precision mechanical systems.

  • Precision assembly methods.

  • Fastener and interface design.

  • Experience using CAD software (SolidWorks, Creo, NX, CATIA, or equivalent).

  • Experience with FEA tools such as ANSYS, Simcenter NX, Femap, Hypermesh, or equivalent is desirable.

  • Good technical communication, documentation and problem-solving skills.

General Requirements

  • Ability to work in a quality-focused, fast paced operational environment.

  • Ability to think critically and make independent decisions.

  • Interpersonal skills to enable working in a diverse and dynamic team.

  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.

  • Writing and delivering technical documents and briefings.

  • Verbal and written communications skills as well as organizational skills.

  • Travel occasionally as necessary.
