Wireless Communications & Controls Engineer (Vehicle / Robotics)

Job type: Full Time · Department: Software · Work type: On-Site · USD 100,000-130,000 / year

St. Louis, Missouri, United States

About Us

At Intramotev, we are dedicated to revolutionizing the freight industry by liberating tons of freight from congested highways, reducing carbon emissions, and enhancing transportation efficiency. We are deploying self-propelled battery-electric railcars and vehicles to transform freight logistics and bring innovation to our rail network.

Based in St. Louis, MO, we are committed to promoting industrial revitalization, saving lives, and minimizing the environmental impact of trucking and transportation. We actively foster a work environment for every teammate that's welcoming, respectful, and inclusive, with great opportunities for professional growth. Find your future with us.

Role Overview

We are seeking a Wireless Communications & Controls Engineer to join our communications team as a peer to our existing communications engineer, co-owning the communication layers that connect tablet controllers, edge/site servers, and our self-propelled battery-electric railcars and vehicles. This is embedded, field-deployed RF and wireless engineering for machines in motion — real-time control links, protocol design, embedded networking, RF hardware selection, and field validation — not enterprise, campus, or data-center IT networking. The successful candidate shares ownership of interface architecture, testing and validation, and design reviews; neither engineer reports to the other, and together they own the growing communication workload this domain requires.

This is a full-time, 100% in-office role based in St. Louis, MO. You'll work within a team of 3–10 engineers and engage in occasional domestic travel for testing, integration, demonstrations, and customer interactions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design & Architecture: Co-own the architecture of the wireless communication layers linking tablet controllers, edge/site servers, and the railcars — real-time control links, protocol design, and interface definitions between infrastructure and moving vehicles.

  • RF & Hardware Selection: Select, integrate, and validate RF hardware, radios, and antennas for reliable command-and-control links under real-world mobility conditions, including multipath, interference, and range/handoff.

  • System Development: Develop and integrate communication software modules in C/C++ and Python across embedded targets, edge servers, and controller applications, and optimize networking for low-latency, high-resiliency real-time links between site infrastructure and vehicles in motion.

  • Testing & Validation: Test and validate communication systems on operating railcars — not only in the lab or on the bench — drive fielded issues to root cause, and provide lifecycle support for fielded systems alongside the existing communications engineer.

  • Collaboration: Partner as a co-owner with the existing communications engineer and collaborate across electrical, mechanical, and software teams on interface architecture and design reviews.

  • Innovation & Research: Evaluate emerging wireless technologies — cellular LTE/5G, C-V2X, private LTE/5G — and recommend applications that improve link reliability for machines in motion.

Compensation & Benefits

Base salary: $100,000–$130,000 plus equity

Intramotev offers a comprehensive benefits package for all team members, including:

  • Medical coverage: We cover 100% of employee medical premiums, plus low-cost dental and vision options.

  • Vacation: Full-time employees enjoy unlimited paid time off.

  • Equity: Full-time employees receive equity in the company.

  • Parental leave: New parents receive paid time off to spend quality time with their family.

About You: Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience)

  • At least a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.

  • 3+ years of experience developing communication systems, networking solutions, or related engineering projects, with a focus on robust and reliable system design.

  • Hands-on experience designing or deploying a wireless communication link that commands, controls, or telemeters a moving vehicle, robot, drone, or piece of mobile equipment — for example teleoperation, remote or real-time control, or vehicle-to-infrastructure links — under real-world RF conditions such as mobility, multipath, interference, and range/handoff. This is embedded, field-deployed RF/wireless engineering for machines in motion, not enterprise, campus, or data-center IT networking.

  • Proficiency in C/C++ and Python for developing and integrating communication software modules.

  • Demonstrated ability to define, implement, and optimize networking requirements for low-latency, high-resiliency real-time systems.

  • Experience testing and validating communication systems in the field, not only in the lab or on the bench.

  • Willingness to expand into technical areas beyond your area of expertise; ability to develop innovative and novel approaches.

  • Open-minded and comfortable working in a teaming environment as an individual contributor.

  • Fluent in both written and verbal English.

  • U.S. Person (immigration or work visa sponsorship will not be provided).

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience)

Candidate should have a working knowledge of one or (ideally) multiple areas listed below:

  • Wireless/RF experience on vehicles or mobile equipment: cellular LTE/5G, 802.11p/DSRC or C-V2X, licensed RF bands, or private LTE/5G — particularly in RF-challenging conditions such as open track, tunnels, or high-vibration environments.

  • RF link-budget analysis, antenna placement and selection, or spectrum planning for mobile platforms.

  • CAN bus, Ethernet, or other vehicular communication protocols.

  • Low-latency back-end to front-end (edge-to-vehicle) interface experience.

  • Linux TCP/IP stack tuning on embedded targets (Yocto, OpenWrt, Debian).

  • Safety-critical systems development and certification experience.

  • Experience in directly applicable industry or projects, such as Rail, Electric Vehicles, or Unmanned/Autonomous Systems or robotics.

  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies and version control such as git.

Typical Education and Experience

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education (e.g. Bachelor and/or Master) and typically 3 or more years' related work experience, or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. Master + 1 year' related work experience).

Relocation

This position offers a competitive relocation package for qualified candidates.
