St. Louis, Missouri, United States

About Us

At Intramotev, we're liberating tons of freight from congested highways, reducing carbon emissions, and enhancing transportation efficiency. We're building self-propelled battery-electric railcars and vehicles that make rail the more competitive, more sustainable choice for freight movement — bringing a 200-year-old industry into its next era.

We're committed to fostering an environment for every teammate that's welcoming, respectful, and inclusive, with real opportunity for professional growth. Find your future with us.

Role Overview

We are hiring an Associate Embedded Software Engineer to join the on-vehicle embedded team within Software, working on the FreeRTOS real-time system and embedded-Linux device that run across our self-propelled battery-electric railcars and vehicles. This is an entry-level role: you'll take on a single embedded device or firmware feature at a time, under code review and close mentorship from the team's Senior Embedded Software Engineer(s), rather than owning a firmware domain independently.

This is a full-time, 100% in-office role based in St. Louis, MO. You'll work within a team of 3–10 engineers and engage in occasional domestic travel for hardware integration, bring-up, and field testing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Software Development: Write clean, testable, well-commented C and C++ for components of the on-vehicle embedded system, extending an existing codebase under guidance from senior engineers.

  • Testing & Validation: Write unit tests for your changes and understand why testing before deployment to hardware matters; contribute to test coverage for the features you touch.

  • Debugging & Hardware Integration: Debug on target hardware using tools such as JTAG/SWD or a logic analyzer, with support from senior teammates.

  • Collaboration: Work in a git-based collaborative workflow — branching, merging, pull requests, and code review — and communicate status and blockers clearly to the embedded software lead and team.

Compensation & Benefits

Base salary: $65,000 to $90,000 plus equity

Intramotev offers a comprehensive benefits package for all team members, including:

  • Medical coverage: We cover 100% of employee medical premiums, plus low-cost dental and vision options.

  • Vacation: Full-time employees enjoy unlimited paid time off.

  • Equity: Full-time employees receive equity in the company.

  • Parental leave: New parents receive paid time off to spend quality time with their family.

About You: Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience)

  • At least a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field (in progress or completed).

  • 0–2 years of embedded software experience (internships, co-ops, research, or significant coursework/project work count), with working knowledge of C and C++ on an embedded target — comfortable reading and extending an existing codebase, not only building greenfield — plus a solid understanding of data structures, algorithms, and real-time / multi-threaded programming fundamentals (RTOS concepts such as tasks, scheduling, and interrupts, from coursework or project work).

  • Exposure to debugging on target hardware (JTAG/SWD or logic analyzer), even in a lab or coursework setting, and developing discipline about testing — writes unit tests and understands why testing before deployment to hardware matters.

  • Experience with git in a collaborative workflow (branching, merging, pull requests, code review); comfort working in a Linux command-line environment; willingness to expand into technical areas beyond your area of expertise, and to take an unfamiliar problem, break it down, and work toward a solution with guidance.

  • Open-minded and comfortable working in a teaming environment as an individual contributor.

  • Fluent in both written and verbal English. Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.; CPT/OPT is supported.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience)

Candidate should have a working knowledge of one or (ideally) multiple areas listed below:

  • Coursework or project exposure to CAN bus or other vehicle-network protocols.

  • Exposure to motor-control, robotics, or other real-time control-loop software.

  • Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools (Claude, Cursor, Copilot, etc.).

  • Rust exposure.

  • Cross-disciplinary project work with hardware or electrical engineers.

  • A portfolio of technical work you can walk us through — GitHub, personal projects, research, or substantial coursework.

  • Rail, EV, or unmanned-systems experience.

Typical Education and Experience

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 0 or more years' related work experience (internships, co-ops, research, or significant coursework/project work).

Relocation

Relocation assistance is not offered for this role.
