About Matter

At Matter, we’re rebuilding America’s industrial might to fuel humanity’s boldest ambitions from Earth to Mars. Amid a $10 trillion crisis of lost factories and fragile supply chains, we’re creating AI-powered, software-defined contract manufacturing factories that launch three times faster, scale five times more efficiently, and adapt in minutes—our focus is on high-complexity assemblies, such as humanoid robots, drones, AI infrastructure, and satellites.

Backed by Tesla and Rivian veterans, we’re building a self-learning factory network — manufacturing’s ChatGPT moment. If you’re a top engineer, AI innovator, or builder ready to tackle trillion-dollar challenges, join us in re-industrializing the West and beyond.

Role Overview

We are seeking a Member of Technical Staff, Quality Intelligence to help architect our Matter Quality Intelligence Platform, and lead forward deployment with our key clients.

For forward deployment, we will form an integral part of ensuring customer designs can be scaled seamlessly with premium quality. This will require undertaking D-FMEA to highlight Critical to Quality Characteristics, Defining Part & Assembly GD&T, Developing and Executing our Inspection Strategy and undertaking Root Cause Analysis.

The knowledge gained from forward deployment engagement will be used to populate the Knowledge Base for our Quality Intelligence Platform. You will play a key role in architecting this Knowledge Base as part of our AI-native Manufacturing System. As an early team member, you will define how data underpins next-generation manufacturing intelligence, embedding standards, live measurements, and generative reasoning into a unified quality system.

Key Responsibilities

  • Architect Matter’s Quality Intelligence System by defining how design intent, manufacturing standards, live measurements, and historical learnings are structured, connected, and reasoned over within our Manufacturing Platform.

  • Lead forward-deployed quality engagements with customers, working hands-on with design, manufacturing, and test teams to:

    • Perform DFMEA / PFMEA and identify Critical-to-Quality (CTQ) characteristics

    • Define part and assembly GD&T, inspection methods, and measurement strategies

    • Develop control plans, SPC strategies, and launch-readiness criteria

    • Drive root-cause analysis and corrective action during ramp and early production

  • Translate real-world manufacturing knowledge into AI-native systems, capturing FMEAs, control plans, inspection logic, and failure learnings as structured and vectorized knowledge that compounds across programs.

Qualifications

  • Background in quality engineering within high-value manufacturing, particular automotive, consumer electronics, defense or robotics.

  • Strong understanding of APQP, PPAP, and core tools such as FMEA, SPC, and 8D.

  • Solid foundation in quality analytics and data visualization (e.g. Plotly, Matplotlib, or Streamlit).

  • Strong proficiency in Assembly Process Sequence, Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing, and Tolerance Analysis.

  • Experience in bringing up Failure Analysis, Reliability Testing, and Metrology Laboratories.

  • Excitement for working in an early-stage environment, building the AI backbone of a new manufacturing intelligence platform.

Why Join Us

At Matter, you’ll lay the foundation for how our factories learn, adapt, and deliver with world-class precision. This is a unique opportunity to:

  • Build the test engineering backbone of a generational company redefining global manufacturing.

  • Own significant equity and play a pivotal role in the “Reindustrialize America” movement, and be at the frontier of Physical AI.

  • Operate at the intersection of AI, robotics, and advanced manufacturing, where supply chain resilience defines competitive advantage.

  • Shape execution across frontier programs — from satellites to AI infrastructure to defense robotics.

  • Build the systems and culture that will scale Matter from one factory to a global network.

  • One of the fastest-growing hard-tech startups in the Valley
