About Plum

At Plum, we're on a mission to make employee health benefits as intuitive and delightful as your favorite daily app. We've built a sharp design team that can untangle complexity — but now we need someone to shape where design goes next. You'll lead the entire design function: product designers, researchers, and illustrators. You won't just manage output — you'll design the team that designs the product.

Role Responsibilities

  1. Set the vision, not just the roadmap. Health is a domain where thinking six months ahead isn't enough. You'll define where product experience should go — not just what's next in the sprint.

  2. Make research drive outcomes. Document meticulously to build a clear map of what we know and where the gaps are in user behavior across the app. Keep research plugged into product analytics. Intuition is good, data-supported intuition is better. Stay close to problems across teams. That shapes the research roadmap, so we're always asking the right questions, not just running studies.

  3. Build design's seat at the table. Design decisions happen in leadership rooms. Today, design isn't always in those rooms. You'll change that — by demonstrating value, earning trust, and presenting your point of view with clarity and calm.

  4. Refine relentlessly. We don't need more features. We need sharper ones. Understand what's working, what's not, and have the conviction to cut what doesn't serve users — and teach your team to think this way.

  5. Grow designers who grow themselves. Build feedback loops where the team knows their own craft quality and actively levels up. Create a culture where people support each other, celebrate thinking, and aren't afraid to try new visual directions.

  6. Make room for the interesting work. Streamline the repetitive so the team has time for real design thinking. The health benefits space is full of opportunity — make sure we're actually exploring it.

What We're Looking For

  • 12+ years in product design, with meaningful experience leading designers and researchers

  • Comfort working across B2B and consumer-facing experiences — understanding both workflow complexity and user delight

  • A portfolio that shows craft and judgment — knowing what to build, what to iterate, and what to let go

  • Genuine curiosity about where design is headed — new visual languages, AI, emerging interaction patterns

  • Strong opinions, held loosely. You know when to advocate and when to listen. You present your perspective calmly, without ego — this is how design earns influence here.

What does success look like after Year One?

A team that asks the right questions, knows what to explore, and understands user behavior deeply enough to know what to build and what to leave out. Feedback flows naturally — designers communicate thoughtfully and help each other do better thinking.

Plum becomes so useful that it earns a place in how most Indian employees manage their health and their family's — something they return to, not just when they have to, but because it helps. Insurance, a process that usually brings anxiety, starts to feel intuitive and calm.

The team finds meaning in the problems they're solving and the conversations they're having.

Real Talk

Design and Research haven't yet fulfilled their potential to bring together the full picture — who our users really are, how they behave across different demographics in India, and where the future of health is headed. The understanding exists in parts, but it hasn't been synthesized and brought to the people making decisions. We want this to change, so the organization can move with real confidence.
