Liquidity Operations Engineer

Job type: Full Time · Department: Engineering · Work type: Remote

About us

Relay is a cross-chain payments protocol that provides instant, low-cost cross-chain bridging, swaps, and transactions. We're the fastest and cheapest way to bridge and transact across chains, serving over 5 million users who have completed 59+ million transactions with $6+ billion in volume across 85+ chains.

Our company mission is to make transacting across chains as fast, cheap, and reliable as online payments. We are building the core infrastructure to abstract chains from end user payments, enabling the next billion users to experience the benefits of blockchain without the UX burdens.

About the role

The Liquidity team keeps Relay's liquidity reliable, competitively priced, capital-efficient, and within its risk framework. Reporting to the Head of Liquidity, you will be one of the first members of this newly formed team, helping define its operating model while owning the day-to-day health of liquidity across assets, chains, wallets, CEXs, bridges, and in-flight rebalances.

This is a high-ownership, production-facing role. You will monitor the system and external markets, execute time-sensitive changes and rebalances, investigate incidents, and build the dashboards, alerts, automation, and procedures that allow Liquidity Operations to scale. We work agentic-first: AI agents extend our ability to monitor, investigate, analyze, and automate, while people remain accountable for decisions that move capital, change production behavior, affect clients, or alter risk.

Unlike a core engineering role, this position focuses on internal operating processes and human-in-the-loop verification of system behavior. You will compare expected and actual outcomes, investigate gaps, and determine whether the right response is an operational action, a process change, or an engineering fix - all in service of reliable customer liquidity, strong execution, capital efficiency, and controlled risk.

We are looking for candidates who are currently located in or can work full-time in the US West Coast (Pacific Standard Time) timezone.

What you'll do

Own and reconcile live liquidity operations

  • Monitor current and target balances across every supported asset, chain, wallet, CEX, bridge, and in-flight rebalance

  • Execute and verify approved rebalances, transfers, configuration changes, provider disablements, and other time-sensitive liquidity actions

  • Reconcile what actually happened against what should have happened across balances, transfers, rebalances, fees, P&L, and system state; identify gaps and drive them to resolution

  • Schedule recurring liquidity activities, participate in the follow-the-sun on-call rotation, and maintain clear operator handoffs, action logs, and ownership across coverage windows

  • Apply the allocations, risk limits, validation steps, approval requirements, and escalation paths set by the Head of Liquidity and the team's governance framework to every material action

Respond to incidents, market risk, and external changes

  • Investigate balance gaps, stuck funds, stale configuration, pricing anomalies, venue failures, and other liquidity incidents; stabilize the system and drive the issue to resolution

  • Handle ad hoc market-risk situations such as volatility spikes, depegs, price dislocations, venue disruptions, unusual flows, or sudden liquidity loss by assessing exposure and executing or escalating the approved response

  • Coordinate directly with bridge, exchange, chain, and integrator teams when external support or recovery action is required

  • Monitor news, provider channels, documentation, fee schedules, asset changes, deprecations, and shutdowns using data feeds and automated agents

  • Turn incidents and external changes into clear operational actions, configuration updates, risk reviews, post-incident improvements, or scoped tickets

Build monitoring and operational systems

  • Build and maintain Grafana and Datadog dashboards for current versus target balances, in-flight activity, execution health, costs, and material exceptions

  • Design actionable alerts and Slack updates that help the team detect problems before clients do and understand what response is required

  • Build safe automation for recurring checks and operational workflows using validation, dry-run modes, approval gates, audit trails, and rollback paths

  • Create and improve runbooks, SOPs, permission guides, checklists, incident playbooks, and decision trees

Improve liquidity with Quant and Engineering

  • Use observed flows, execution results, failure modes, and rebalance history to improve target balances, alert thresholds, and operating policies

  • Work with the Head of Liquidity and Quantitative Developer to measure route performance, rebalance timing and cost, price impact, and the operational effects of allocation, pricing, or hedge decisions

  • Work with Engineering to turn recurring manual interventions and failure modes into reliable product and platform improvements

  • Help prepare new assets, chains, venues, and client requirements for production with explicit monitoring, controls, and operating procedures

  • Keep customer outcomes visible: ensure liquidity is available where needed and operational decisions support reliable, competitively priced execution

About you

  • You take ownership of outcomes and are excited to help form a new team, clarify boundaries, and build its operating culture from the beginning

  • You learn quickly, pay attention to detail, and are ready to take increasing ownership as your judgment develops

  • You're calm and methodical during incidents, even when information is incomplete and capital is at risk

  • You care about controls, auditability, and knowing when an action requires review or escalation

  • You enjoy a role that combines recurring operational discipline with investigation and unexpected problems

  • You improve the system behind the work instead of accepting repeated manual intervention as normal

  • You communicate clearly across technical and non-technical teams and leave useful written context behind

  • You're excited about crypto and capital markets, and comfortable using AI agents to increase your coverage while independently validating their output

Skills and abilities

  • 1-3+ years of practical experience in liquidity operations, trading operations, treasury, market operations, crypto operations, or an equivalent environment

  • Working knowledge of capital markets and operational risk, including liquidity, order books, execution, fees, slippage, exposures, and controls

  • Experience performing or supporting time-sensitive operational work and carefully verifying the result

  • Ability to query data, read logs, work with APIs, and build or modify dashboards, alerts, and small automations

  • Experience using, writing, or improving runbooks, incident procedures, checklists, reconciliations, or other operational controls

  • Strong judgment, written communication, and ability to operate autonomously within a defined risk framework.

Nice to have

  • Crypto or blockchain industry experience, particularly with chains, bridges, CEXs, stablecoins, wallets, custody, or cross-chain settlement

  • Familiarity with Grafana, Datadog, SQL, Python, TypeScript, and reconciliation or alerting systems

  • Experience with rebalancing, treasury movements, position monitoring, P&L, or risk limits.

  • On-call, incident-command, provider-escalation, or high-severity production-support experience

  • Track record converting manual operational processes into safe, monitored, and auditable automation

What we offer

  • Competitive base salary

  • Equity package

  • Comprehensive health benefits

  • Unlimited PTO policy with encouraged minimum

  • Remote-first culture with emphasis on collaboration, communication, and flexibility
