The Yard Mechanic plays a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of our company-owned tools, equipment, and vehicles. This position requires a high level of mechanical expertise, attention to detail, and effective communication skills to collaborate with team members and vendors. As a Yard Mechanic, you will be responsible for maintaining our equipment fleet in good working order, adhering to established standards and procedures.

In addition to your technical expertise, you will also be expected to provide exceptional customer service to our internal stakeholders, including drivers, foremen, and project managers. Your ability to work effectively in a team environment, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines will be essential to the success of our operations.

Skills & Qualification

  • Knowledge of construction materials and equipment, including pumps, pipes, and mechanical systems

  • Ability to diagnose and repair complex equipment issues, ensuring minimal downtime and optimal performance

  • Experience with heavy equipment maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting

  • Understanding of safety protocols and industry regulations, with a strong focus on ensuring a safe working environment

  • Proficiency in shop maintenance and repair, including welding, metalworking, and mechanical repair

  • Good verbal communication skills and the ability to get along with people at all levels both internal and external to our organization

  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze complex issues and develop effective solutions

  • Demonstrated attention to detail and a commitment to doing the job right the first time, with high-quality results

  • Ability to juggle many concurrent responsibilities while still maintaining quality standards and meeting deadlines

  • High school diploma with a focus on mechanical shop or a two-year degree in shop or automotive mechanics

  • At least two years hands-on experience working in equipment repair or engine repair, with a strong focus on heavy equipment maintenance

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate the condition of defective tools, equipment, and vehicles located at the Yard or at construction job sites, collaborating with the Yard Manager in trouble shooting and finding solutions for defective items

  • Perform standard repairs to defective items, ensuring minimal downtime and optimal performance

  • Prepare an estimate of cost to complete repair and seek authorization to proceed from Yard Manager before commencing repair for more extensive or unusual repairs

  • Follow a standard maintenance schedule developed collaboratively with the Yard Manager, performing routine maintenance on company-owned tools, equipment, and vehicles

  • Place approved orders for replacement parts with vendors, ensuring that the Yard Manager is informed of all such deliveries and that all associated paperwork is provided to the Yard Manager

  • Ensure that the shop area is neat, clean, and orderly, with all tools stored in their proper place and the shop surfaces free of trash and debris before departing work each day

  • Collaborate with other staff assigned to the Yard, including Teamsters, in performing responsibilities of this job as well as in providing support to others in the execution of their responsibilities

  • Perform additional responsibilities as may be assumed or assigned from time to time in support of our company's effort to achieve client loyalty
