About StashAway

StashAway is a digital wealth management platform built around a simple idea: high-quality investment management should not be reserved for the ultra-wealthy.
We help investors build and manage their wealth through professionally managed portfolios and a growing range of investment solutions. Our approach combines institutional investment thinking, technology and a strong focus on what clients are actually trying to achieve with their money.
Malaysia is an important growth market for StashAway. As we scale the business, we are looking for an experienced investment professional who can combine strong investment judgement with the governance responsibility that comes with being a licensed director of a regulated fund management business.

The Role

This is a senior investment role within StashAway Malaysia and part of StashAway's broader regional investment organization.
You will help ensure that the investment solutions we offer Malaysian clients are well designed, appropriately managed and relevant to their needs. You will work closely with our regional Investment Office, Product, Country and Compliance teams on portfolio management, investment products and the evolution of our Malaysia proposition.
You will also serve as the Licensed Director of StashAway Malaysia, taking formal responsibility for appropriate oversight of our Digital Investment Management activities and helping ensure that the business operates to the standards expected of an SC-regulated fund manager.
We are looking for someone who wants to do both. This is not a passive directorship and it is not purely a portfolio-management position.

What we are looking for

The regulatory requirements are non-negotiable. You should have:

  • You should have 8 - 12 yrs of relevant fund management experience with substantive exposure to portfolio management for at least 5 of those years.

  • A current CMSRL for portfolio management, or a background that makes you clearly eligible to obtain the appropriate CMSRL and SC approval for the role.

  • The ability to satisfy the Securities Commission Malaysia's fit-and-proper requirements for a director and Licensed Director of a Digital Investment Manager.

  • Appropriate academic or professional qualifications relevant to investment management.

Beyond the license, we are looking for someone with:

  • Strong grounding in portfolio construction, asset allocation and investment risk.

  • Experience evaluating multiple asset classes rather than expertise limited to individual security selection.

  • Good understanding of ETFs, mutual funds and other collective investment vehicles.

  • The ability to distinguish good investment thinking from compelling investment storytelling.

  • An investor-first mindset. Product decisions should begin with the client's investment problem rather than the product we happen to be able to manufacture or distribute.

  • The ability to communicate complex investment concepts simply and credibly.

  • Comfort working in a technology-led, fast-moving organization where teams are small and senior people are expected to be hands-on.

  • High personal standards around governance, conduct and regulatory responsibility.

Particularly valuable, but not essential:

  • CFA or equivalent professional qualification.

  • Experience in a digital wealth manager, asset manager, private bank or investment platform.

  • Previous investment committee or regulated management experience.

What you will do

Investment oversight and portfolio management

  • Provide investment oversight for portfolios and investment solutions offered by StashAway Malaysia.

  • Work with the regional Investment Office on portfolio construction, asset allocation, manager and instrument selection, risk management and portfolio implementation.

  • Review portfolio performance, positioning, investment risks and material portfolio changes.

  • Ensure investment decisions and portfolio outcomes remain consistent with stated investment mandates, client risk profiles and StashAway's investment framework.

  • Provide independent investment judgement and challenge where appropriate rather than simply implementing centrally developed decisions.

  • Participate in relevant investment and product governance forums.

Build the Malaysia investment proposition

  • Develop a deep understanding of how Malaysian investors save, invest and build wealth, and translate those insights into product and portfolio opportunities.

  • Work with Product, Country and Investment teams to identify gaps in our Malaysia offering and help develop new investment solutions.

  • Assess ETFs, funds, asset classes, investment structures and other potential instruments for inclusion on the platform.

  • Contribute investment expertise to product launches and improvements and to client facing teams (eg. Wealth Advisors).

Licensed Director and governance responsibilities

  • Serve as the Licensed Director for StashAway Malaysia's Digital Investment Management business, subject to the required regulatory approvals.

  • Maintain the required CMSRL for portfolio management and satisfy applicable SC fit-and-proper and experience requirements. The SC currently requires a director of a Digital Investment Manager to have at least five years of relevant fund management experience and hold a CMSRL for portfolio management.

  • Exercise appropriate oversight of StashAway Malaysia's regulated investment management activities and ensure that the business is operated in accordance with its licence conditions and applicable securities laws.

Represent investment thinking externally

  • Be a credible investment voice for StashAway in Malaysia with clients, regulators, partners and the broader investment community.

  • Support client education by explaining investment principles, portfolio decisions and market developments in a way that sophisticated and everyday investors can understand.

  • Partner with Marketing and the Country team on high-value investment content, events and client conversations.

  • Represent StashAway's investment philosophy without becoming a market commentator whose job is to predict the next market move.

What success looks like:

Within the first 6 to 12 months, we would expect this person to have:

  • Established themselves as a trusted investment leader within the Malaysia business and the regional Investment Office.

  • Provided strong, independent oversight of StashAway Malaysia's investment management activities.

  • Built a clear view of the investment needs of Malaysian clients and translated this into concrete improvements to our product roadmap.

  • Helped strengthen the range and relevance of investment solutions available to Malaysian investors.

  • Built an effective working relationship with Compliance and the Malaysia Board while maintaining clear accountability between investment and control functions.

  • Become a credible external representative of StashAway's investment philosophy in Malaysia.
