Mission Design Engineer

Deployment of SSA sensors across various locations and orbital regimes is crucial for obtaining a comprehensive understanding of the near-Earth environment. The mission design engineer will provide expertise in developing and improving software modules for the design, simulation, and operational planning of this sensor infrastructure.

Responsibilities 

  • Develop and maintain in-house mission design software tools for SSA infrastructure analysis & simulation.

  • Continuously upgrade and optimize software programs to add simulation capabilities and enhance computational performance.

  • Support decision-making for the design of space-based and ground-based missions backed by simulation-based results.

  • Formulate mission operation plans and CONOPS for optimal utilization of the SSA infrastructure.

  • Create, test, and deploy software scripts for planning and scheduling of sensor operation and management.

  • Interface with software and operations teams for successful deployment, testing, and operations of mission software infrastructure.

  • Participate in design reviews and technical presentations to stakeholders.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. in astrodynamics, aerospace, mathematics, physics, software, or a relevant discipline.

  • Strong development skills in Python, including computational optimization techniques like NumPy, multithreading, multiprocessing, and GPU acceleration.

  • Experience with version control systems like Git.

  • Knowledge of orbital mechanics.

  • Good understanding of optimization and scheduling algorithms.

Preferred Qualities 

  • Experience with mission design tools such as STK, FreeFlyer or GMAT.

  • Advanced proficiency in heuristic scheduling algorithms.

  • Exposure to software development, API integrations, cloud computing (AWS), containerization (Docker), etc.
