Lead AOCS Engineer

Full Time · Engineering · On-Site

Bengaluru, Karnataka, India

Digantara is a leading Space Surveillance and Intelligence company focused on ensuring orbital safety and sustainability. With expertise in space-based detection, tracking, identification, and monitoring, Digantara provides comprehensive domain awareness across regimes, allowing end users to have actionable intelligence on a single platform. At the core of its infrastructure lies a sophisticated integration of hardware and software capabilities aligned with the key principles of situational awareness: perception (data collection), comprehension (data processing), and prediction (analytics). This holistic approach empowers Digantara to monitor all Resident Space Objects (RSOs) in orbit, fostering comprehensive domain awareness.

Digantara is seeking a Lead Satellite Attitude and Orbit Control System (AOCS) engineer to join our dynamic team and conceptualize and architect the AOCS subsystem for CubeSat/microsatellite. The engineer will be responsible for leading a team of multidisciplinary engineers to design, develop, and realize a state-of-the-art AOCS subsystem.

Why Us?

  • Competitive incentives, galvanizing workspace, blazing team — pretty much everything you have heard about a startup + plus you get to work on space technology.

  • Hustle in a well-funded startup, allowing you to take charge of your responsibilities and create your moonshot.

Ideal Candidate

  • Someone with strong expertise in leading the design and development of AOCS for CubeSats/MicroSats operating in low-earth orbit, with a strong focus on performance and reliability.

Responsibilities

  • Architect, model, analyse & optimize the AOCS system for CubeSat/Microsat in low Earth orbit to meet the satellite requirements.

  • Collaborate with the electrical/mechanical subsystem and payload engineers and derive the AOCS subsystem requirements.

  • Lead the team of algorithms, embedded hardware, and software engineers to design and develop AOCS with target performance, stability, and agility requirements.

  • Develop and implement attitude determination and estimation algorithms and carry out simulations to verify the AOCS performance and stability.

  • Generate sensor, actuator, and control system requirements and derive the high-level hardware and software requirements.

  • Select hardware components, i.e., sensors, actuators, and control electronics, and develop specifications and ICDs for these components.

  • Develop unit-level and integrated-level test requirements for AOCS and generate the design and test reports during the development life cycle.

Qualifications

  • B.Tech/B.E in Electronics/Electrical Engineering or M.Tech/M.E or PhD degree in Control systems/Electronics/Microelectronics engineering.

  • 6 to 10 years of demonstrated experience in the design and development of AOCS subsystems for LEO satellites.

  • Strong understanding of control theory, spacecraft dynamics, and embedded systems.

  • Proficiency in MATLAB, Simulink, or Python to model and analyse the AOCS system.

  • Deep understanding of the sensors, i.e., sun sensor, star tracker, GPS receiver, magnetometers, and actuators, i.e., Magnetic torquers and reaction wheels, and their interaction.

  • Experience with Hardware In Loop(HIL) simulations, Software In Loop(SIL) simulation tests for the AOCS.

  • Strong expertise in understanding and implementation of EMI/EMC control.

  • Knowledge of orbit determination, estimation, and propagation methods.

Preferred Skills

  • Technical leadership to drive the in-house design and development of magnetic torquers, reaction wheels, and star trackers.

  • Experience with on-orbit AOCS operations for cubesat/microsat in LEO.

  • Knowledge of embedded systems and flight software development, STK/Freeflyer/ GMAT or equivalent mission simulation tool.

  • Understanding of satellite subsystems and systems-first development approach.

  • Knowledge in data communication protocols such as I2C, UART, SPI, LVDS, RS422/485, etc.

  • Familiarity with electrical ground support equipment to test the performance of AOCS at the satellite level.

General Requirements

  • Ability to work in a mission-focused, operational environment.

  • Ability to think critically and make independent decisions.

  • Interpersonal skills to enable working in a diverse and dynamic team.

  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.

  • Writing and delivering technical documents and briefings.

  • Verbal and written communication skills, as well as organizational skills.

  • Travel occasionally as necessary.
