Lead Satellite Thermal Engineer

Full Time · Engineering · On-Site

Bengaluru, Karnataka, India

Digantara is a leading Space Surveillance and Intelligence company focused on ensuring orbital safety and sustainability. With expertise in space-based detection, tracking, identification, and monitoring, Digantara provides comprehensive domain awareness across regimes, allowing end users to have actionable intelligence on a single platform. At the core of its infrastructure lies a sophisticated integration of hardware and software capabilities aligned with the key principles of situational awareness: perception (data collection), comprehension (data processing), and prediction (analytics). This holistic approach empowers Digantara to monitor all Resident Space Objects (RSOs) in orbit, fostering comprehensive domain awareness.

Digantara is seeking a Lead Satellite Thermal Engineer to join our dynamic team who is passionate about modelling and analyzing the thermal environment for subsystems and satellites. In this role, the candidate leverages expertise to design, develop, and realize spacecraft thermal control systems for cubesat/microsatellites in low Earth orbit.

Why Us?

  • Be part of a collaborative and innovative environment where your ideas and skills make a real difference to the entire space realm

  • Push the boundaries with hands-on experience, greater responsibilities, and rapid career advancement

  • Competitive incentives, galvanizing workspace, blazing team—pretty much everything you have heard about a startup

Ideal Candidate:

  • Someone with professional experience in leading the design, analysis, optimization, and implementation of thermal control systems for CubeSat/MicroSat in Low Earth Orbit (LEO).

Responsibilities:

  • Create thermal control system requirements in collaboration with system, mission, structures, and avionics engineers, and perform design trade-off studies.

  • Lead the design and development of the thermal control system and carry out extensive modelling of the internal and external thermal environment of the LEO satellite.

  • Generate thermal models of satellite subsystems/satellites and carry out transient, steady-state simulations to predict thermal performance.

  • Select and implement active/passive thermal components to achieve optimal thermal performance in a Low Earth Orbit environment.

  • Analyse satellite avionics' thermal interfaces and heat transfer paths, and develop thermal control schemes.

  • Create comprehensive test plans and execute tests to validate the thermal performance of subsystems and the satellite.

Required Qualifications:

  • B.Tech/B.E, M.Tech/M.E, or PhD in Mechanical/ Thermal/ Aerospace  Engineering.

  • 6-10 years of professional experience in thermal design and analysis of satellites operating in Low Earth Orbit (LEO).

  • Experience with satellite projects, from conceptualisation to testing, launch, and on-orbit operations.

  • Proficiency in working with thermal analysis software, i.e., NASTRAN/ESTRAN, IDEAS, NX thermal, or any equivalent.

  • Strong understanding of thermal design for satellite avionics hardware, thermal properties of materials, and space environment considerations.

  • Experience in developing and executing thermal vacuum testing plans to validate thermal design and performance.

Preferred Skills:

  • Strong first principles thinking with a deep understanding of thermal design, analysis, implementation, and testing.

  • Experience in testing your own thermal designs at the subsystem/satellite level.

  • Knowledge of thermal implementation to ensure proper integration and testing of thermal components at the satellite level.

  • Prior experience in leading teams for design and developmental activities.

  • Understanding of satellite subsystems and systems-first development approach.

  • Being a part of complex projects while playing a key role in the overall project management process.

General Requirements:

  • Ability to work in a mission-focused, operational environment.

  • Ability to think critically and make independent decisions.

  • Interpersonal skills to enable working in a diverse and dynamic team.

  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.

  • Writing and delivering technical documents and briefings.

  • Verbal and written communication skills, as well as organizational skills.

  • Travel occasionally as necessary.
