About the Role:

We're looking for an experienced Lead Backend Engineer to take ownership of our backend architecture and drive technical excellence across the engineering organization. In this role, you will lead the design and development of scalable, high-performance backend systems that power our rapidly growing SaaS platform serving 50,000+ businesses globally.

As a technical leader, you will make high-impact architectural decisions, shape our technical roadmap, and set engineering standards that enable the team to build reliable, maintainable systems. You'll partner closely with Product, Marketing, and cross-functional teams to translate business requirements into robust technical solutions while mentoring and elevating engineers around you.

This is a high-ownership role where you'll have the autonomy to drive technical initiatives end-to-end—from architecture and design through implementation and production support. Key Focus Areas:

Technical Leadership & Architecture

• Lead the design and architecture of scalable backend systems, making key technical decisions that impact the entire platform.

• Define and evolve the backend technical roadmap in alignment with business goals and product strategy.

• Evaluate and introduce new technologies, frameworks, and best practices to improve system performance, reliability, and developer productivity.

• Drive technical discussions, design reviews, and architectural decisions across backend components.

Hands-On Development & System Ownership

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services using Python/Django and associated frameworks.

• Own critical backend systems end-to-end—if you ship it, you support it.

• Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks, optimize database queries, and ensure system reliability at scale.

• Participate in on-call rotations and lead incident response for backend services, driving root cause analysis and durable fixes.

Engineering Excellence & Quality

• Establish and enforce engineering best practices including code reviews, testing strategies, CI/CD, and documentation standards.

• Champion code quality, maintainability, and technical debt management across the backend codebase.

• Build observability into systems—monitoring, alerting, and logging—to ensure operational excellence.

Collaboration & Mentorship

• Partner with Product, Marketing, and cross-functional teams to translate business requirements into technical solutions.

• Mentor and coach backend engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence, ownership, and continuous learning.

• Communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, articulating complex technical concepts clearly.

• Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and backend development best practices.

About You:

We're looking for someone who:

• Brings a minimum of 7+ years of experience in software development, with at least 2 years focused on Python-based frameworks.

• Has hands-on experience with Python, Django, and REST APIs.

• Possesses a minimum of 2+ years of experience with cloud platforms like AWS or GCP.

• Has experience working with both NoSQL and SQL databases.

• Has a proven track record of making architectural decisions that scale gracefully as systems grow.

• Demonstrates experience leading technical initiatives end-to-end, from design through production.

• Has mentored or led engineers, with the ability to elevate those around you.

• Demonstrates strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently as a hands-on self-starter.

• Has willingness to learn and ability to flourish in a dynamic, high-growth, entrepreneurial environment.

• Possesses true love for technology and what you do.

• Has maniacal attention to detail.

Bonus Skills (Nice-to-Have):

• Experience with microservices architecture and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).

• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.

• Experience with message queues (RabbitMQ, Kafka, Redis).

• Experience with distributed systems design and understanding of CAP theorem trade-offs.

• Background in B2B SaaS product development at scale.

• Experience building and operating systems that handle high traffic and enterprise-level workloads.
